Wasim Jaffer Ahead Of India’s 1st ODI vs NZ

Wasim Jaffer, a former Indian cricketer, believes that all-rounder Washington Sundar should start over leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal in the opening ODI against New Zealand on Friday in Auckland (November 25).

The seasoned player revealed that he doesn’t want to play Chahal because Eden Park has shorter ground dimensions and the hosts have four left-handed hitters. He continued by saying that the Men in Blue could benefit from all-rounder Sundar’s batting skills.

“I am going with Washington Sundar at No. 7 because New Zealand has four left-handers. Eden Park is a small ground, so I might be tempted to go with Yuzvendra Chahal, but Washington Sundar gives you a batting option besides being a left-hander, and he might give you better returns,” Wasim Jaffer explained to ESPNCricinfo.

In his starting XI, Wasim Jaffer also included Umran Malik, one of the four pacers. The recently finished T20I series did not present an opportunity for the Jammu & Kashmir speedster. The 23-year-old will be eager to play in his first ODI in New Zealand, where the terrain is favorable for quick bowling.

“Shardul at No. 8 and Deepak Chahar at No. 9, followed by Arshdeep and Umran Malik at No. 10 and 11. Umran Malik is better suited for this format than T20,” Wasim Jaffer explained.

“Dhawan and Gill will be my openers”: Wasim Jaffer

Wasim Jaffer chose all-rounder Deepak Hooda as his sixth bowling option in place of Hardik Pandya, who was rested for the ODIs and who had a four-for in the T20I series. But instead of Suryakumar Yadav, he went with Rishabh Pant at No. 4.

“Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill will be my openers. Shreyas Iyer at No. 3, Rishabh Pant at four because he is a wicketkeeper. Suryakumar Yadav at No. 5 and Deepak Hooda at six. He will be my sixth bowling option.”

Sanju Samson, who went undefeated in the ODI series against South Africa, was left off Jaffer’s starting lineup. Against the Proteas, the wicketkeeper-batsman scored 118 runs in three innings.
