TRS wins high-voltage Munugode bypoll after neck-to-neck fight


HYDERABAD: The Telangana Rashtra Samiti’s Prabhakar Reddy on Sunday clinched victory over his nearest rival Komatireddy Rajgopal Reddy of the BJP in the Munugode bypoll. The TRS candidate polled won the bypoll with a margin of 10,296 votes. Prabhakar Reddy was polled 96,574 votes, while his nearest rival Rajgopal Reddy got 86,515 votes. The Congress’ Palvai Sravanthi polled 22,449 votes.

The BJP candidate Rajgopal Reddy conceded defeat by evening 4 pm after the party did not fare up to its expectations in the 9th and 10th rounds of votes which relate to urban area of Chanduru.

The BJP, however, claimed moral victory as it claimed to have proved anti-incumbency against the ruling party in the state.

The counting of votes in Munugode on Sunday was marked by many twists and turns. While the TRS was leading in the first round in the morning, the second and third rounds put the BJP in advantage giving hopes to the saffron party.

From the fourth round, however, the TRS maintained its lead over the BJP. The ruling party dominated Choutuppal and Chanduru, the two urban centres in the constituency, on which the BJP pinned hopes.

The ruling party maintained its lead till information received till 12th round of counting. The TRS reportedly continuing its lead in the 13 round also, forcing the BJP candidate Rajgopal Reddy to concede defeat.

Third round: TRS – 7010, BJP – 7426, Congress – 1532
