The BCCI announced on Wednesday that star Indian batsman Rishabh Pant would “undergo surgery for ligament tears,” thereby excluding him from playing competitive cricket for the foreseeable future.

Ankle and knee ligament injuries that Pant received in a vehicle accident on December 30 will require significant treatment, according to a press statement from BCCI secretary Jay Shah. Pant was evacuated from a hospital in Dehradun to Mumbai.

“He will be admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital and Medical Research Institute and will be under the direct supervision of Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala, Head – the Centre for Sports Medicine, and Director – Arthroscopy & Shoulder Service at the hospital,” Shah said.

“Rishabh will undergo surgery and subsequent procedures for ligament tears and will continue to be monitored by the BCCI Medical Team throughout his recovery and rehabilitation. The Board will make every effort to aid and expedite the recovery process of Rishabh and will provide him with all the support he needs during this period,” it added.

BCCI To Handle Rishabh Pant’s Care

While Pant, 25, was traveling from Delhi to Rourkee, he lost control on the NH-58 highway and collided with a divider, yet he managed to survive the terrible vehicle accident. In addition to having a badly bruised back and scrapes on his forehead, Pant also has injuries to his knee and ankle.

Although most injuries are trivial, the ankle and knee are more concerning. Since he is a centrally contracted cricket player, the board has the final say in how he is treated.

Due to the significant swelling, MRIs of his damaged knee and ankle could not be done, therefore the extent of the rupture is still unknown.

Nevertheless, it is comprehended that every sports-related incident diagnosis and prognosis for a centrally contracted cricketer will be made by the BCCI’s panel of doctors, and the rehabilitation and recovery will be handled by the Sports and Medical Science team at NCA, under the direction of Dr. Nitin Patel. Pant will now be absent from both the lucrative Indian Premier League and the Test series against Australia.
