Former India National Cricket Team opening batsman Gautam Gambhir has said that India batting stars Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul are “very orthodox” players and the middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav, on the other hand, is a very different kind of player.
The 32-year-old Suryakumar has been in terrific form in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022. So far, he has smashed 225 runs in 5 innings at an average of 75 and a strike rate of 193.97, including 3 fifties.
The No.1 ranked T20I batter Suryakumar smashed a quickfire half-century off 23 balls against Zimbabwe in the last ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 Super 12 game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday, November 6. Overall, he smashed sensational 61 runs off 25 balls, including 6 terrific fours and 4 exceptional sixes.
His sensational knock against the Chevrons helped him become the first Indian in the history of T20Is to score 1,000 runs in a calendar year. He is only the second player – Mohammad Rizwan being the first – to score 1000 T20I runs in a calendar year.
For me, he is the Player of the Tournament already – Gautam Gambhir on Suryakumar Yadav
Former India National Cricket Team opening batsman Gambhir said that for him Suryakumar is already the Player of the tournament “for the kind of impact he has had” in the ongoing edition of the multi-nation tournament.
“We have spoken a lot about him. Players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul are very orthodox. Suryakumar is different. India haven’t had these kinds of players, especially batting at No.4,” Gambhir was quoted as saying to Star Sports.
“He has scored above 200 runs with three half-centuries. For me, he is the Player of the Tournament already for the kind of impact he has had even if India do not go on to win the World Cup,” he added.
