IPL 2023: “You Might Need A Replacement Next Year If Not This Year”

The much-awaited mini-auction for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition will be held on December 23 in Kochi. Former India cricketer Akash Chopra believes the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) need a replacement for Faf du Plessis, as the former South African skipper does not appear to be a long-term captaincy option.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore purchased Du Plessis for 7 crores in the last mega auction and named him captain for the IPL 2022 season. RCB have retained their core and released just five players, the least among all teams. They can acquire seven more players, including two overseas players. The franchise had the second lowest purse in the auction of 8.75 crore, and Kolkata Knight Riders had the smallest purse of 7.05 crore.

I Don’t Think This Team Can Do Any Big Spending – Aakash Chopra

In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Akash Chopra opined that Joe Root and Kane Williamson are not the best options for RCB as they need an explosive player. He mentioned that the team might not be able to afford Jason Holder.

“I don’t see Faf (du Plessis) as a long-term investment. You might need a replacement next year if not this year. So can they start thinking about that? I am not saying that you go towards Joe Root or Kane Williamson because this ground does not suit them at all,”

“You need an explosive player, not someone who scores through singles and doubles. But from a captaincy point of view – Jason Holder, but how will they afford him? They will not be able to do that. I don’t think this team can do any big spending,” he added.

They Will Have To Make This Auction Fantastic – Aakash Chopra

Chopra feels that the Royal Challengers Bangalore have most of the bases covered in their squad. The cricketer-turned-commentator stated that the RCB are already a formidable side heading into the auction, and they will need to make this auction ‘fantastic’ to win the trophy.

“If Royal Challengers Bangalore have to win the trophy, they will have to make this auction fantastic. But the truth is also that they are already a settled team. They haven’t released any big names, they haven’t come with the viewpoint of enhancing their purse.”

“The team is ready. Faf is the captain, Virat Kohli is there, Rajat Patidar is doing very well here, they have an opening option in the form of Anuj Rawat, a finisher in the form of Dinesh Karthik, a middle-order player in the form of Glenn Maxwell, Finn Allen, Wanindu Hasaranga, Shahbaz Ahmed, Harshal Patel, Mohammed Siraj, Josh Hazlewood – it’s a very decent team.”
