India’s stand-in skipper KL Rahul was hit on the hand while batting in the nets on Wednesday, a day before the second Test against Bangladesh, which is scheduled to be played on Thursday, December 22 at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka.

India beat Bangladesh by 188 runs in the first test of the two-match series at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram. Rahul led India after regular captain Rohit Sharma failed to recover from a thumb injury sustained during the ODI series.

Hopefully, He’ll Be Okay – Vikram Rathour

India’s batting coach Vikram Rathour confirmed Rahul’s injury in a press conference. Rathour did not confirm whether Rahul would play the final Test match and expressed hope that the right-handed opener would be fit to play the match.

“It doesn’t (look serious),” India batting coach Vikram Rathour told reporters on Wednesday. “He seems to be fine. Hopefully, he’ll be okay. The doctors are looking at it, but hopefully, he’ll be okay.”

India needs to win the second Test to improve their chances of finishing second in the World Test Championship standings. If Rahul misses the second match, vice-captain Cheteshwar Pujara will take over as captain. Abhimanyu Easwaran might make his Test debut and open the batting with Shubman Gill.

The 27-year-old has spent time with India’s red-ball team but has never made the XI. Easwaran was called up to replace the injured Rohit Sharma, who is also out of the Test series after failing to recover from a finger injury. The Bengal right-hander scored two centuries for India A in two four-day matches against Bangladesh A and is familiar with the pitch conditions.
