ICC T20 World Cup 2022: “Suryakumar Yadav Is Earning The Rewards For The Hard Work That He Has Put In”

India coach Rahul Dravid hailed batter Suryakumar Yadav after he broke multiple records in his match-winning knock against Zimbabwe in the Men in Blue’s last Group 2 encounter in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Sunday, November 6, 2022.

India had already qualified for the semi-finals after the Netherlands defeated South Africa in the first match of the day in Adelaide and were later joined by Pakistan in the final four after they beat Bangladesh in the second match.

The Rohit Sharma-led side was clinical against Zimbabwe as they scored 186/5 in 20 overs after the captain won the toss and chose to bat first. KL Rahul made 51 and Virat Kohli made 26, but the last few overs boost was provided by Suryakumar Yadav, who slammed 61* in 25 balls with 6 fours and 4 sixes to his name.

This also meant that he went past 1,000 runs in T20Is in 2022 and became only the second batter after Mohammad Rizwan (1326 runs in 2021) to achieve this feat. He also went past 60 sixes in one calendar year.

“Touchwood. It’s Incredible”- Rahul Dravid On Suryakumar Yadav’s Form

The 32-year-old has hammered 225 runs in five matches at an average of 75 and a strike rate of 193.97. The batter’s heroics ensured Team India topped the points table in Group 2, winning their fourth game in the Super 12 round.

At the post-match conference, Dravid was asked for his thoughts on Suryakumar’s consistency.

He said: “Touchwood. It’s incredible. That is why he is the number one T20 player in the world at the moment, because of that consistency in the format. Scoring at the strike rate that he does, it is not easy to be consistent. It is just fantastic the way he is playing. I think he is very clear in his processes, in his tactics. “He has worked very hard. One of the things about Surya is just the amount of hard work that he has put in during the nets – in thinking about his game, his fitness.

If I look at Surya from a couple of years ago, just to see how he takes care of his body and the amount of time he spends on his fitness. He is earning the rewards for a lot of the hard work that he has put in on and off the field. And long may it continue. He has been absolutely phenomenal for us and it is just a joy to watch.”

Zimbabwe only managed 115 runs in their innings as R Ashwin took three wickets while Hardik Pandya and Mohammad Shami scalped two each.

India will now face England in the second semi-final on November 10 in Adelaide.
