Qualifying for the FIFA World Cup is a meat grinder and there are several stars who will not be able to attend the biggest sporting event in the world. Salah, Ibrahimovic and many of the world’s best players will not be able to attend Qatar 2022.

The FIFA World Cup is the tournament no one wants to miss. It is the meeting of the best players in the world in a single competition, the most beautiful of all and, although Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, the top stars of the planet, qualified with Argentina and Portugal, there are some great players who fell by the wayside and will miss the event.
Mohamed Salah and Egypt were eliminated by Senegal, while Poland left Sweden’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic out of the FIFA World Cup once again, but they are not the only ones.
I mean, just look at this. Salah sails his penalty over… and surely anybody would, given the lasers.

Salah, who had put Egypt into their third FIFA World Cup in historic fashion at Russia 2018, missed his penalty in the shootout and missed out on qualification to Qatar 2022 against Senegal.
Meanwhile, Ibrahimovic played some time in Sweden’s 2-0 loss to Poland and will also watch from the sidelines. The Milan striker, in his long career, only played in two FIFA World Cups: Korea-Japan 2002 and Germany 2006.

Some of today’s soccer stars missed out on the most prestigious international tournament: Erling Haaland and his teammate Martin Odegaard with Norway, the Italian national team with Lorenzo Insigne and Ciro Immobile among others, plus Barcelona striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who failed to qualify with Gabon even for the African finals.
Others who had already been left out are Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak, perhaps the best in the world, with Slovenia and David Alaba, Real Madrid defender, with Austria.

On the other hand, Manchester City striker Riyad Mahrez was left out for Algeria in the last minute of extra time, due to Cameroon’s goal.
In addition, Alexis Sánchez and Arturo Vidal, from Chile, and Juan Fernando Quintero, Juan Guillermo Cuadrado, James Rodríguez and Luis Díaz, from Colombia, were left out of the South American qualifiers.

In the list of those who are on the list, there are two players who will be making a historical record: Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, the idols of Argentina and Portugal, will play in Qatar 2022 their fifth FIFA World Cup, all in a row, and will reach a select group of those who have participated the most times.
Others with five World Cup appearances? Mexico’s Antonio Carbajal (1950, 1954, 1958, 1962, 1966) and Rafa Márquez (2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018), Germany’s Lothar Matthäus (1982, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998) and Italy’s Gianluigi Buffon (1998, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014), who missed out for the second time in a row on reaching his sixth FIFA World Cup with the eliminations of Russia and Qatar.

Leo and Cristiano, meanwhile, have appeared in every FIFA World Cup they have played in: Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014 and Russia 2018, while they will again travel with their national teams to Qatar 2022 for their fifth tournament of this category. Curiously, Argentina and Portugal have never met.
In that sense, Argentina and Portugal will be seeded in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 due to the FIFA ranking that has them among the top seven in the world, so they will not be able to meet in the group stage.
However, it is possible that, depending on the draw, Argentina and Portugal could meet in the round of 16 or later. Will this be the year?
