England are led by Jos Buttler in the series. He batted at number six in the first ODI and scored 39 off 34 balls to set up a score. Besides David Malan’s entertaining century there were not many positives from the game for the visitors. Jason Roy is going through a rough patch with the bat which saw him getting dropped from the T20 World Cup.

Phil Salt was also dismissed cheaply. Sam Billings who decided to skip the IPL for concentrating on international cricket scores just 17 off 22 balls batting at number five.

The bowlers too were below-par. David Willey took two wickets. Chris Jordan and Liam Dawson took one each. Dawson was the most expensive of the lot as he conceded 65 off his 10 overs.

Overall the first ODI was a disappointing game for the visitors. England have won 11 ODIs in Sydney against Australia over the years. It is one of their lucky grounds and the side would look to win the game.

The hosts pulled off a clinical chase with David Warner and Steve Smith two of their modern batting pillars scoring runs. Warner scored 86 while Smith struck an unbeaten 80 as they made the 288-run chase look very easy.

Australia won the game by six wickets in the end. Travis Head’s contribution at the top of the order also meant that the platform was set for the lower order to finish the job.

Among the bowlers, Pat Cummins and Azam Zampoa picked two wickets each. Both the bowlers have a good record in Sydney taking 14 wickets each in ODIs. Josh Hazlewood has taken 16 wickets so far at this venue in 9 matches. Warner (953) and Smith (849) are also among the top scorers at this venue. The side would like to play with the same template as they look forward to winning the series.
